The Brides of the Lamb is an indigenous Catholic religious institute at the level of a public association of the faithful and was founded in the Archdiocese of Kampala, Wakiso District, Uganda (East Africa), in the 1992 by the late Msgr. Expedito Magembe. He was inspired by a deep unquenchable spiritual thirst placed in his heart by God—a longing to seek and experience the depth of God’s love in an extraordinary way through intimacy with Him. Day by day, his zeal and thirst increased the more and whenever he read the books and life of St. Tereza of Avilla, his thirst was an controllable due to the words she repeatedly said that’ the Spiritual journey of a christian has its end and fulfilment in total union with God, in otherwords the spiritual marriage of the Soul’

Since then, this idea continued to unfold continuously such that he even desired to share the thirst he had with other people who were determined to pick his idea. He began selling the idea to the girls who used to approach him desiring to become religious but with no qualification to make this idea grow.

When he was transferred to Kiziba Parish and later became the Parish Priest, he decided to bring these girls to the parish where a serious beginning was noted. He encountered so many challenges in his priestly ministry, which seemed to create obstacles in the lives of those seeking a deeper level of holiness. Among the main challenges were the widespread involvement in witchcraft—affecting both the rich and the poor, the educated and the uneducated—the rise of numerous religious sects that led people astray, and the severe and cruel spiritual torments inflicted by Satan, which bound many souls and hindered them from attaining the salvation that we all yearn for.

In response, he felt called to form a group of individuals who would humbly and wholeheartedly dedicate their lives, with undivided hearts, to pursuing deep intimacy with the Lamb. This desire for intimacy with the Lamb opened the way for what would later become the functional expression of the charism, answering the question: How can we support the ministry of deliverance, exorcism, and healing without a powerhouse? Only such a prayer can sustain and grow this ministry.

It was his conviction that it is the of the bride of the Lamb who can ably keep the grace of divine intimacy, present herself as the carrier of God’s presence and continually fix her eyes upon the Lord in deep intercession readily visible in perpetual adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. This emotional and spiritual disposition allows God to contrast an inner sanctuary in the heart.

It is our daily struggle to grow into intimacy with the Lamb, doing everything as a bride to maintain a level of union with the groom because it is only the bride who can touch the heart of the groom and he listens. In the bible the canaanite woman who touched the cloak of Jesus aroused his attention despite the crowd pressing him. (Luke 8:45-46). In the same manner, the bride taking the closest place to the groom is capable of touching the heart of Jesus and arouse the needed attention in the fulfillment of the ministry.

All this is done through following the Spirituality of St. Teresa of Avila which total union with God.

The Name: Brides of the Lamb (B.O.L)

‘Bride’
best suits to the one who is connected to the Lamb, not just proximity but to a profound and intimate union with the Lamb who was slain. It reflects a relationship of love, surrender, and total belonging to Him. As Scripture says, “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9). Through this deep union with the Lamb, the Bride is empowered to stand in strong and effective intercession. United with Christ, she participates in His victory, praying with authority to overcome the works of the devil and to bring freedom to souls. It is through this intimate communion with the Lamb that her prayer becomes powerful and transformative.  As Scripture reminds us, “The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come!’” (Revelation 22:17). In this way, they invite all people to live in purity, faithfulness, and expectation, preparing for the eternal union with Christ.
